Round Table Ball raises over £17,000 – smashing previous totals

Local teenagers with complex needs – learning disabilities and significant mental illness – to benefit

The Ipswich Round Table Ball held on Saturday 5th March 2016 at the Corn Exchange Ipswich has raised a total of £17,008 for the Martlesham-based educational charity Lapwing. The ball in 2014 raised £14,000.

This black tie event with 334 guests featured a balloon pop sponsored by insurance group Ryan’s and a live auction with prizes ranging from a private Champagne tasting to a bespoke designer fragrance being created for the winner. Guests were entertained by sixth form musicians from St Joseph’s College and local band ‘Frisky’.

VIP guests included The Mayor of Ipswich, Lapwing patron and Poirot actor Hugh Fraser and BBC Radio Suffolk presenters Lesley Dolphin and Mark Murphy.

The proceeds from the ball will go towards the Lapwing Educate and Liberate project, helping teens aged 12-18 with learning disabilities and severe mental illness who are displaying challenging behaviour and require 2:1 support.

Lapwing will work alongside Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT) so that integrated mental health support and education packages can be offered to students not currently in mainstream or special school or who have difficulties accessing learning, with the aim of both enabling greater independence (leading to 1:1 or even no support) and allowing access to community activities.

Sophy Jones, chief executive of Lapwing, said: “At Lapwing we are constantly hearing about young people with severe learning disabilities and mental ill health being excluded from their community and from education due to their high support needs. This partnership is so exciting because, together with NSFT, we will allow some of the most marginalised young people in Suffolk to take their place in society.

Craig Sennett, Chairman of Ipswich Round Table, says “During my year as Chairman I’ve seen a great team of guys deliver exceptional things for the people of Ipswich. We’ve set new records as a group and seen Ipswich rise to one of the strongest groups nationwide.

“I chose Lapwing as I’ve seen how important it is to protect people of all ages within our community and I’ve seen just how hard the staff there work. It’s a modern, dynamic charity and the team put vulnerable young people at the heart of everything they do. They need your help to carry on this great work.”
