Hudson Group and Ipswich Building Society lead the way in offering work experience as businesses invited to register for launch event on 2 February

A pilot scheme offering marginalised young people the opportunity to have a tour of local businesses and work experience has launched. It is hoped this initiative will lead to these young people having their aspirations raised and being given vital work experience opportunities.

A launch event is planned on Thursday 2 February at Quay Place (St Mary at the Quay) to enroll more businesses in the initiative and offer the chance for business networking.

As well as fostering stronger ties between marginalised young people and the Suffolk business community it will also offer a good opportunity for business networking. Speakers include Sophy Jones, CEO of Lapwing, Joanne Leek Head of Marketing and Brand from Ipswich Building Society and Steve Flory of Hudson Group.

Lapwing students face exclusion from education, family and/or community. They are ‘left out’ and ‘left behind’ for many reasons: learning difficulties, mental illness, being in care, to name just a few. This puts them at risk of abuse, being drawn into criminality – even radicalised. Their chances of achieving qualifications and joining the labour market are low.

Sophy Jones, Lapwing CEO, says “Lapwing offers the lifeline of tailored education, experiences of work and the opportunity to develop personal attributes such as resilience, positive decision-making skills and character. With our support students can successfully transition back into education, work and their community.”

Joanne Leek, Head of Marketing and Brand, Ipswich Building Society explained “By inviting students into the workplace we can educate and inspire; it’s a simple initiative but can have a great impact even by raising the aspirations of just one student.”

Steve Flory, MD, Hudson Signs added “Not all students have family friends to introduce them into the work place or set up summer internships. We want local businesses to open their doors to those hard to reach students who don’t usually get such opportunities.”

Advance registration is essential. To secure your free place at the launch event please contact Wendy Quantrill at Lapwing on 01473 621762.
